Businesses need a well educated person to look at their input and output functionality and determine how to best handle any situation between clients and the manufacturers. Business Analysts, or as they’re more commonly referred to, BA’s, do not work in any particular field but rather cover a wide range of topics and necessities depending on the company type and their needs. So as a company buys or sells a product, it isn’t as simple as just designing a product and selling it to a customer.

The BA must look at factors that affect the product and how the product will interact in different environments. For instance, if a new gadget is created, will it need to be weatherproof? Will there be extra material involved? Will the extra material cost more? Will there need to be more man hours to create the new material? All of these things must be considered by a BA. So, let’s take a look at what it actually takes.

Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is a must for any BA. No degree in the world can prepare you to think on your feet to solve problems and analyze situations. Companies want someone that can think outside of the box and look at a new situation objectively and find all of the possible flaws and complications that go with it.

A strong business mind: If you’re still in school, take as many economics and business classes as possible. They will help you better understand the ins and outs of a business so you’re not in the dark when trying to analyze your company’s needs. By understanding how each and every new product or system that’s implemented completely changes the business landscape, you can not only interpret the data from a business perspective but can also take it and use that information to solve problems.

Experience: No degree that you can obtain can supplement good experience. If possible, try and find an internship at a business that will let you shadow a business analyst in the real world. This will give you an idea of how things are put into practical application outside of the classroom. And in many cases, sometimes it’s offered on the front end, internships can actually turn into jobs at the end of them. Companies look for dedicated individuals that have both skills and experience to take on the job.
